I left Hathershaw in 1966 and joined the Lancashire Constabulary as a Police Cadet. In 1969 I was appointed as a Constable and served in the Oldham Division. In 1974 I became a member of the CID again serving in and around Oldham. I was promoted to Sergeant in 1976 and moved back into uniform at Mill St Police Station, Bradford, Manchester for 12 months then returned to the CID as a Detective Sergeant. I remained in the CID gaining steady promotion until my retirement from the Police in September 2000 when I was the cover head of CID for the whole of Greater Manchester.

As a Detective Inspector I brought the Moors Murderer Myra Hindley back to Saddleworth Moor on two occasions in 1987 to search for the bodies of missing children. In 1995 I became Head of Major Crime investigation for the Greater Manchester Police and led  numerous murder enquiries some of which were very high profile.

After my retirement I formed my own business in training Police Investigators of all ranks in Investigative Skills both in the UK and Abroad. I am an Associate Tutor for the International Faculty, National Police College Bramshill, this involves me training Police Investigators from various countries throughout the world either in their own countries or when courses are run for them in the UK. British Police Forces also take advantage of my services.

I am asked, on occasions, by both radio and television, to comment on various subjects involving crime investigation and in April 2009 I was a guest on Radio Manchester where I was interviewed for one hour on my Police career.
